Senate Democrats just refused to pay for Trump’s war.
Congress has passed a defense bill every year since 1961. The streak survived Vietnam, both wars in Iraq, and every shutdown fight since. On Tuesday the Senate blocked this year’s bill rather than hand over $1.15 trillion for a war Congress never authorized. Four senators missed the vote, and the bill fails even if all four show up and vote for it.
The war they wouldn’t fund changes shape by the day. Trump announced a 20% toll on cargo passing through the Strait of Hormuz on Monday, then killed his plan Tuesday after Gulf leaders called to object. Now he promises that next week gets “really bad,” with strikes on Iran’s bridges and power plants if Tehran doesn’t cut a deal.
