New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill warned 12 fuel companies this week that Donald Trump’s lifting of Russian diesel sanctions won’t protect them.

Congress banned Russian fuel in 2022 after Vladimir Putin invaded Ukraine. Trump made a deal with Putin last month anyway, and the sanctions came off without the certification or congressional review the law requires, as tankers loaded with Russian diesel sailed for the East Coast.

Sherrill’s letter warns of millions of dollars in penalties, and she said the law gives prosecutors five years to act while Trump leaves office in two. “People are on notice,” she told reporters on Wednesday, a day after voters handed both chambers of Congress to Democrats.
