What Happened Today – October 23, 2026

Donald Trump ordered the Justice Department to sue Alaska so it can’t certify its Senate race if Republican Dan Sullivan loses.

“I’m the one that said, ‘do it,’” he told reporters Friday. The suit claims Alaskans can’t tell their senator apart from a retired schoolteacher with the same name, though the ballot labels one of them the incumbent and the state’s Supreme Court already ruled both could run. No president before him has asked a court to throw out an election’s results before there were any.

This week, Attorney General Todd Blanche wouldn’t rule out the department blocking a state’s certification in what he called a “doomsday scenario.” The last time a certification stood in Trump’s way, a mob broke into the Capitol and sent senators and representatives fleeing. This time the Justice Department filed the paperwork.

Today's Quote
Yes, of course there’s scenarios that we can all come up with hypothetically, you know, some doomsday scenario for example, right? So, I don’t think it’s proper to make any kind of conclusory statements about what’s going to happen in the future, because I have no idea what’s happening in the future.
