What Happened Today – June 21, 2026

JD Vance finally sat down with Iranian leaders in a Swiss resort on Sunday to end a war his own boss spent the day threatening to restart.

The talks were set for Friday and called off when Israeli strikes on Lebanon put the ceasefire back in doubt, and Vance boarded the plane only once a truce held. He told the Iranian negotiators the two countries could turn over a new leaf, and called the progress real. Then Donald Trump went on Truth Social and warned that the United States would “hit Iran very hard again,” and harder this time, unless Tehran reined in the proxies he blames for the fighting in Lebanon. Iran’s delegation filed a formal protest, saying the president’s threats violated the same agreement his vice president had flown there to save.

Iran has no reason to trust America’s vice president and his promises of peace. The biggest threat to this ceasefire is not at the table in Switzerland. He sits in Washington. Vance can promise a fresh start. The president can erase it with a single post.

Today's Quote
Despite the headlines, things are actually getting better there [in Lebanon], and things have calmed down a little bit. It’s gonna be something we’re just going to have to continuously manage to ensure that, you know, Israel and Lebanon are both safe and secure. That’s fundamentally the goal of this — to make the whole region safe and secure. The big problem is that you have — somebody will shoot and then somebody will respond. and you kind of have a chicken and egg problem where you’ve just got to stop the shooting for long enough to get the ceasefire to keep hold. That’s what we’re going to try to do. We’ll keep on working at it, but things have gotten better.
