What Happened Today – May 16, 2026

Bill Cassidy finished third in his own Senate primary tonight for voting to convict Trump in the January 6 impeachment trial.

It’s the second Trump-driven primary purge in twelve days, with a third already teed up. Five Indiana Republican state senators lost their seats May 5 for refusing to redistrict on Trump’s timeline. Representative Thomas Massie will likely lose his Kentucky primary Tuesday, and tonight Trump threatened to do the same to Lauren Boebert for campaigning in Kentucky with Massie.

Pay no attention to the fact that the filing deadline for Boebert’s seat has already passed. This administration finds a way around rules like that. Marjorie Taylor Greene and Boebert defined MAGA in the House. Trump still drove Greene out and turned her into a target. Boebert is next. The Bush, Cheney, and Romney families couldn’t stop MAGA when they had the chance. Remind the Republicans in your life that to save what’s left of their party, they need to step up now.

Today's Quote
Everything was about Intel, and everything was about our chip companies. They stole our chip industry. So I’ve said that for years. I said, you know, for years they stole our chip — if we would have had one of our presidents just say, we’re going to say — we’re going to put 100 percent chip — you can leave, you can build in Taiwan, but we’re going to — you sell it back into the United States, we’re going to put a 100 percent or a 200 percent tariff, we would have never lost the chip. We lost the chip industry.
