What Happened Today – November 2, 2026

The Supreme Court rejected a last-minute plea from Donald Trump’s Justice Department on Monday, one day before the election, without a single noted dissent.

For years, career Justice Department lawyers kept prosecutors on the sidelines until the votes were certified. The department sued California and Alaska in the last three weeks of this campaign, and Trump said he personally ordered the Alaska lawsuit. Every court to rule on either case has said no.

Judge David Carter turned down the California request after more than 3.7 million people there had already voted. “Never before in American history,” he wrote, had the federal government, on the eve of an election, “sought to coerce a state and local government to abandon their own Constitutional elections procedures and bend to the will of the Executive Branch.”
