The archbishop of Milwaukee publicly apologized for praying behind Donald Trump’s chair in the Oval Office.

Archbishop Jeffrey Grob was one of 12 bishops invited to meet privately with Trump on Thursday. A White House aide videoed the prayer without telling them and posted it to X and Facebook that afternoon, 12 days before the midterms. Asked whether the bishops had consented, the White House responded that no president has ever been better for Catholic Americans.

Des Moines Bishop William Joensen said the White House took advantage of the bishops. Grob wrote that he has since heard from people hurt by Trump’s policies, and that he went with reservations he wishes he had heeded.
