Republican Sen. Roger Marshall of Kansas wants ICE to call the sheriff before it comes to town.
Agents started pulling people over in Dodge City, Garden City and Liberal before dawn Tuesday, and local police learned about it the same way everyone else did. A meatpacking plant delayed its shifts, and the Dodge City schools warned parents to update their children’s emergency contacts. By Wednesday, Marshall and fellow Republican Sen. Jerry Moran had both called Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin.
In January, a week after an ICE agent shot and killed Renée Good in Minneapolis, Marshall told CNN that “sometimes there’s collateral damage.” He and Moran both voted last year for the $75 billion that made ICE the best-funded federal law enforcement agency. Marshall is up for reelection in just over five weeks, and his collateral damage has moved down I-35 to Kansas.
