ICE Agent Shoots DoorDash Driver in Austin: GovBrief #598

An ICE agent shot a DoorDash driver in Austin just before 1 p.m. today, and by 4:30 the hospital had released him into ICE custody.

Wilber Garces Perez, 28, was shot in the torso in the middle of a delivery. Hospital staff walked his wife and his lawyer off the property when they came to check on him. By nightfall his family still didn’t know where he was being held.

Homeland Security says its own investigators will review what the agent did. Travis County’s district attorney has asked for the evidence, the same request prosecutors in Houston made after an ICE agent killed Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in July. Seven weeks later, Houston’s district attorney said federal officials still hadn’t given his office any information, and he took the case to a grand jury instead.
