What Happened Today – July 6, 2026

The office ICE created to investigate its own agents is instead investigating 131 Americans for criticizing the agency.

David Streever is believed to be one of the 131. Two agents visited his Rochester home over an angry email and handed his wife a formal warning that he may have violated federal law. They later tracked him to the New York City hotel where he and his 7-year-old daughter stopped on the way home from a vacation. Today he filed a federal lawsuit asking a court to declare these warning notices unconstitutional.

This is the office charged with making sure detention facilities are safe for the more than 60,000 people locked inside them. Someone in ICE custody has died every ten days under this administration, and the number of inspection reports has fallen by nearly half. Despite that record, investigators traveled to Rochester because a man sent an email they didn’t like.

Today's Quote
I had nothing to do with the decision. What I did have to do is I said, ‘I think it should be reviewed, because I watched the play and he didn’t do anything wrong. You know, [you’ve] got to look. By the way, if he did, I’d feel differently. Probably if he punched him in the face, if he did something wrong.
