Twenty masked federal agents held off a tribe’s police so contractors could start drilling for Donald Trump’s border wall.
They came onto the Tohono O’odham Nation in Arizona at four in the morning Tuesday with a Border Patrol SWAT team and drill trucks to work three sites. The Nation had posted No Trespassing signs two weeks earlier. The agents parked their vehicles across the road when tribal police arrived to remove the contractors.
The federal government has owned a 60-foot strip along the border for 119 years, and a judge ruled two weeks ago that the wall can stand on it. Getting there means crossing the Nation’s lands, and the Nation told the government to stay out. The government ignored the warning and showed up with a SWAT team.
